PCOS is a condition that causes sufferers to have many small cysts on the ovaries. This condition makes sufferers experience irregular menstrual cycles, so that sufferers will find it difficult to get pregnant.

However, is it still possible for PCOS sufferers to get pregnant?

As we know that PCOS is one of the factors that makes it difficult for women to get pregnant. This is because women who suffer from PCOS have ovaries that are larger than normal. However, the possibility of PCOS sufferers to get pregnant is still there.

Pregnancy Program for PCOS Patients

Having a baby is one of the dreams of  many married couples. However, there are several conditions that make it difficult for some women to get pregnant, one of which is PCOS.

Generally, couples who have fertility problems will immediately consult a gynecologist. Especially if you have done several pregnancy programs but there are no results. Seeing this, the doctor will conduct an examination to confirm your health condition, including the possibility that you have PCOS.

Until now, there is still no specific drug to treat PCOS. However, your doctor will suggest several ways to reduce PCOS symptoms so they do not get worse.

1. Changing Lifestyle
The first thing you can do to treat PCOS is to change your lifestyle to be healthier, where you need to change bad habits that can interfere with body health. For example, you need to eat nutritious foods to keep an ideal weight.

PCOS sufferers will have food restrictions that may and may not be consumed, for example, PCOS sufferers have limitations on consuming high-sugar foods. You will be advised to consume fiber-rich foods, such as vegetables and fruit.

In addition to food, you are also encouraged to exercise regularly. In this way, the body stays healthy. Exercise also functions to control blood sugar and insulin levels in the body.

2. Consumption of Metformin
Metformin is a drug that is often used as a diabetes drug. However, metformin itself can also be prescribed for people with PCOS. Metformin serves to reduce insulin resistance to fertility disorders caused by PCOS.

In addition, metformin can also be used to help increase ovulation, regulate the menstrual cycle, reduce symptoms of excessive hair growth (hirsutism), and lose weight.

Of course, in taking this drug there is a predetermined dosage of use. The average dose for taking this drug is about 1,500 to 2,000 milligrams (mg) per day.

3. Use Hair Removal Drugs
The next way is to use hair removal drugs or commonly called "depilatory." This medication is usually in the form of a gel, cream, or lotion. According to some people, this drug is very effective at breaking down the protein structure of the hair until it falls out of the skin.

If this drug is deemed less effective, PCOS sufferers can also use electrolysis (a cosmetic procedure that aims to remove hair from the roots using an electric current).

4. Taking Ovarian Medicine
If a PCOS sufferer wants to get pregnant, the doctor will recommend several drugs, such as clomiphene and letrozole to trigger ovulation. However, if this method does not work, then the doctor will recommend injections of hormones called gonadotropins.

5. Using Contraceptives
For PCOS sufferers who do not want to get pregnant, the most common treatment is to use contraception. There are many types of birth control, such as birth control pills, injections, vaginal rings, or IUDs. In addition to contraception, you can also use hormonal drugs to prevent pregnancy.

However, if contraceptives and hormonal drugs cannot stop hair growth, then after 6 months, the doctor will recommend spironolactone. Spironolactone is a drug that aims to reduce androgen hormone levels in the body.

However, it should be noted that spironolactone cannot be used by pregnant women or women who are planning a pregnancy. If used, spironolactone can cause birth defects. Read: Get to Know Your Contraceptives!

6. Test-tube Baby
One of the pregnancy programs that can be tried for PCOS sufferers is IVF. When you follow this program, the doctor will give you medicine that works to stimulate the ovaries so that more eggs grow and mature.

After that, these mature eggs will be removed surgically. Furthermore, it is combined with sperm so that it can be fertilized in a special tube. And after the embryo grows, it will later be placed back into the uterus in the hope that it can implant properly and develop into a fetus.

PCOS is indeed one of the factors that makes it difficult for women to get pregnant. However, if you look at the explanation above, it can be concluded that there is still hope and opportunity for PCOS sufferers to get pregnant.

It might take a long time to get pregnant. However, with good and proper care, the chances of getting pregnant will also increase.
