How to Stop Birth Control Pills Properly

The birth control pill is one of the most commonly used contraceptives. Some people use birth control pills to prevent pregnancy.

Although there are many different types of birth control pills on the market, they all have the same goal of preventing pregnancy. This is because birth control pills contain synthetic estrogen and progesterone. Where these two hormones function to inhibit ovulation, so that no eggs are mature and ready to be fertilized. In addition, the synthetic hormones estrogen and progesterone function to thicken the mucus in the cervix. As a result, the movement of sperm in the uterus becomes blocked.

The correct way to take birth control pills is that you have to take them regularly, at the same time every day. However, some people often ignore this rule and are not regularly drinking it. Some of the most frequent reasons are due to forgetfulness, being busy, and not understanding how to drink it.

From that irregularity, they did not get maximum results, so they decide to stop consuming it. Regardless of the reason for stopping to use birth control pills, there really is no specific way to stop taking birth control pills.

Please note that after you stop taking birth control pills, you will experience side effects. One of those side effects is hormonal imbalance. You need to wait some time for your hormones to work normally again.

Effects of Stopping Birth Control Pills

There are several effects that occur when you stop taking birth control pills. Some of these effects are as follows:

  1. Pregnancy

When you decide to stop taking birth control pills, it may not take you long to get pregnant. However, there are some women who find it difficult to get pregnant at the beginning when they stop taking birth control pills because their menstrual cycles become irregular.

  2. Irregular Menstrual Cycle

Maybe some women feel that when they are actively using birth control pills, their menstrual cycles are smooth. On the other hand, when they stop using birth control pills, their menstrual cycles become irregular. This is because it takes some time for your hormones to run normally again.

However, if from the start you have a menstrual cycle that is not smooth, then it will take even longer to make it regular. It also happens if your period stops, because it can take months to get it back to normal.

  3. PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome)

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a symptom experienced by women before entering the menstrual period. Birth control pills are usually used to help the body deal with hormonal imbalances that cause anxiety, irritability, and depression during menstruation.

For this reason, when you decide to stop using birth control pills, you may start experiencing PMS symptoms again.

  4. Pimples Appear

Birth control pills can combine the hormones estrogen and progestin to reduce androgen levels that cause acne in the body. Androgens are hormones that produce oil in the skin.

When you stop using birth control pills, it is possible that acne will start reappearing again just before your period.

  5. Weight Loss

Some women who use progestin-only birth control, such as injections, pills, or spirals, will gain weight. When you stop using birth control pills, your weight will also decrease.

However, it is good if you balance it with a healthy diet and regular exercise. That way, the body not only loses weight but also becomes healthier.

As explained earlier, there is no specific way to stop using birth control pills. But maybe there are some things you can apply when you stop using birth control pills while minimizing its side effects.

How to Stop Using Birth Control Pills

  1. Start a Healthy Lifestyle

The first step you need to take is to start a healthy lifestyle. Some women do not realize that before deciding to stop using birth control pills, they must also change their lifestyle to be healthier.

When women decide to stop taking birth control pills, there will be side effects, such as weight loss, acne, irregular menstrual cycles, and others. You can start a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly and following a healthy diet.

This way you can balance the estrogen and progesterone in your body naturally.

  2. Identifying and Overcoming Nutritional Deficiencies

As previously explained, birth control pills contain synthetic estrogen and progesterone. Both of these synthetic hormones can deplete vitamins and minerals in the body. These vitamins include vitamins E, B, and C, minerals, magnesium, selenium, and zinc.

When you decide to stop taking birth control pills, make sure you also eat nutritious foods to replace the lost nutrients.

  3. Pay Attention to Menstrual Cycle

When you stop using birth control pills, you may experience irregular menstrual cycles. Generally it takes time for the menstrual cycle to run normally again.

If your menstrual cycle returns to normal quickly, then that is a good thing. On the other hand, if your period is not regular for months, immediately see a gynecologist to find out the cause.

For this reason, before deciding to stop using birth control pills, it is better if you pay attention to your menstrual cycle first. That way you can overcome some of the effects that occur after you stop using birth control pills.

  4. Restoring Intestinal Health

In addition to reducing nutrients from the body, the use of birth control pills can also damage the internal microbial ecosystem in the body. The longer you consume it, the worse it will be on the health of the body, especially the intestines.

Consume foods that contain high nutrients. For faster results, consume foods that contain powerful prebiotics to restore gut health and function.

  5. Restore Natural Hormones

When you decide to stop using birth control pills, do not forget to restore your natural hormonal balance. Consume foods rich in vitamin B6, such as bananas, sweet potatoes, chicken, and beef.

Consuming foods that contain fat and amino acids is also good for restoring hormonal balance. Read how

  6. Do an Estrogen Detox

Stopping birth control pills will cause hormonal dysfunction. This is because the body is dominated by estrogen.

Thus, you need to do an estrogen detox to restore hormone health. You can consume green vegetables, such as kale, spinach, broccoli, and others to overcome these problems.

Those are some ways to stop using birth control pills to minimize the effects that occur. These methods can be adapted to the condition of each body. If you find it difficult, you can consult a gynecologist to get the optimal directions for your body.
