5 Causes of Black Menstrual Blood

The color of menstrual blood can vary during the menstrual cycle. This depends on the period and health condition of a woman. In general, the blood that comes out of the uterine wall is red, but sometimes it can appear dark black. However, is black menstrual blood dangerous? What causes it? Let's find out the answer through the following explanation!

Causes of Black Menstrual Blood

What causes the color of menstrual blood to be black? Here are some causes that can affect it, among them:

  • Clogged Vagina
When black blood comes out of the vagina, it can indicate a blockage. The blockage may be caused by objects such as a cervical cap or birth control ring, condoms, sex toys, or even tampons. When these objects get stuck, over time they can irritate the vaginal lining and cause an infection. This is what then causes the blood that comes out to be black.

  • Retained Menstrual Blood
When menstrual blood stops and fills the vagina (called a hematocolpos), this can make the blood darker.Generally, this occurs because of a congenital abnormality of the vaginal septum or hymen, which results in a blockage. If the blockage is very serious, a person may not have menstruation at all. In addition, black blood discharge is also often accompanied by symptoms of lower abdominal cramps.

  • Lochia
Bleeding that occurs 6 to 8 weeks after delivery is commonly known as Lochia. This symptom is characterized by the release of frozen blood. At first, the amount of blood that comes out is very large and undergoes oxidation, so that the color becomes very dark. However, after some time, they may turn bright red, yellow, or cream.

  • Implantation Bleeding
Sometimes, when black menstrual blood comes out, it can be caused by implantation bleeding. This occurs when the fertilized egg successfully attaches to the lining of the uterus. Usually, the blood that comes out only lasts for a few days and not too much. In general, this bleeding is also accompanied by early symptoms of pregnancy. However, not all pregnancies will experience implantation bleeding.

  • Cervical Cancer
In some rare cases, if your menstrual blood is black and you experience bleeding during intercourse, it could be an indication that you may have cervical cancer. In general, cervical cancer in its early stages does not show any symptoms. However, when cervical cancer develops into an advanced stage, vaginal bleeding can occur which causes menstrual blood to come out in black.

Black Menstrual Blood is a Normal Condition

No need to panic when menstrual blood comes out black, because sometimes menstrual blood can have a dark brown or almost black color. The blackish brown color of menstrual blood is generally normal. During the menstrual cycle, the color and texture of a woman's blood can change. Menstrual blood can be liquid and scanty, but it can also be thick and come out profusely or in large quantities.

The color of menstrual blood can vary, such as bright red, brown, or dark. Usually, towards the end of the menstrual cycle, the blood that comes out is dark brown and almost black.

In general, black menstrual blood is normal. You don't need to worry too much if there is a change in the color of menstrual blood. However, if the discolored menstrual blood is accompanied by other symptoms such as a burning or itchy sensation in the vaginal area, you should immediately consult a doctor.
