Causes and Treatments of Itchy Vagina and Anus

Itching in the genital area is annoying, especially if left for a long time. This discomfort can affect anyone, and if not treated immediately, it can interfere with daily activities.

If you are experiencing it, don't worry. Come on, read this article to find various information about the causes and how to treat itching in the genital area.

Causes of Itchy Vagina and Anus

Itching in the vagina and anus can be a very annoying problem. This itching can be caused by various factors, ranging from lack of hygiene to infection.

Here are some common causes of itching in the vagina and anus and how to deal with them:

1. Poor Hygiene

Lack of maintaining the cleanliness of the vaginal area and anus after defecating is one of the main causes of itching. Feces stuck to the skin of the anus can cause irritation and trigger itching.

2. Irritation

Using products that contain irritating chemicals can trigger itching in the vagina. These products include soap, wet wipes, vaginal cleansers, sanitary napkins and condoms.

3. Infection

Fungal (candidiasis) and bacterial infections (bacterial vaginosis) are common causes of itching in the vagina. These infections can be accompanied by other symptoms such as vaginal discharge, unpleasant odor and stinging.

4. Sexually Transmitted Diseases

STDs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, HPV, and herpes can cause itching, stinging, or a burning sensation in the vagina and anus. PMS can also be accompanied by other symptoms such as vaginal discharge, unpleasant odor, and sores on the genitals.

5. Lichen Sclerosus

Lichen sclerosus is a skin disease that can cause itching and irritation of the vulva. This disease is more common in postmenopausal women.

6. Pinworm Infection

Pinworms can cause itching in the anus, especially at night. Female tapeworms will come out of the anus at night to lay eggs, so the itching will be more felt at night.

How to Relieve Itchy Vagina & Anus

Itching in the vaginal area and anus can be very annoying. Here are some tips to prevent and overcome it:

  • Avoid using products such as tissues, pads, pantyliners, and feminine cleansers that contain fragrance.
  • Use clean water and unscented soap to clean the feminine area, and do it only once a day.
  • Make sure to clean the vagina properly, from the vagina to the anus. Using toilet paper after urinating should also be done with the same movement.
  • Routinely change sanitary napkins during menstruation.
  • Change underwear every day and choose ones made of cotton.
  • When having sex, use a condom to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Avoid sexual intercourse if the vagina still feels itchy or painful.
  • Try not to scratch your vagina even if it feels itchy.
  • Change into exercise clothing, especially a swimsuit, immediately after exercising.
  • Choose pants or skirts that are comfortable and not too tight.

Maintaining the cleanliness of intimate organs is crucial to preventing itching in the vaginal and anal areas. Itching that doesn't go away and is accompanied by other complaints, such as vaginal discharge, unpleasant odor, or stinging, requires immediate consultation with a doctor. Proper examination and treatment by a doctor can help relieve itching and prevent more serious complications.
