Myth or Fact, Do Ice Cubes Cause Cough/Cold?

Ice cubes or cold drinks are often associated with health myths, one of which is the belief that consuming ice cubes can cause coughs or colds. However, is that really true? Come on, find out the facts in this article to understand whether ice cubes can really trigger coughs or colds or is this just a myth.

Does Consuming Ice Cubes Cause Coughs/Colds?

The opinion that iced drinks can cause colds and coughs is not entirely accurate. The main cause of flu in humans is the presence of viruses and bacteria that can be contained in iced drinks, especially if the manufacturing process does not meet the necessary hygiene standards.

The viruses and bacteria in these drinks can attack the respiratory tract, from the nose to the throat. This is what can ultimately cause symptoms such as colds, coughs and fever due to viral and bacterial infections in the respiratory system.

However, it should be noted that the cause of flu does not only come from food or drink. Transmission of viruses and bacteria can also occur through hands that are exposed to viruses or touching dirty everyday objects. In addition, for some individuals who experience sore throats after consuming iced drinks, this may be caused by an allergic reaction to the cold temperature of the drink or food consumed.

Factors that Trigger Someone to Experience a Cough/Cold

In a study, it was revealed that It is not entirely true that consuming cold food or drinks can directly cause someone to get a cold or cough. On the contrary, this is more related to a decrease in the body's immune system, which makes it easier for viruses to enter through airborne transmission and cause flu symptoms and coughs. For individuals in good health, consuming ice should not be a problem.

However, if you have ever witnessed someone coughing after consuming ice, it is likely that this is related to the following factors:

1. Allergy

If you frequently cough after consuming ice, you may be allergic to the ingredients in the drink. Allergies to certain foods, drinks, or substances can trigger the body's response, including coughing, as a reaction to a potential threat that the immune system perceives.

2. Bronchospasm

Some people experience coughing after consuming very cold food or drinks because they experience bronchospasm, where the muscles in the airways suddenly tighten. This condition can cause narrowing of the airways, difficulty breathing, and ultimately coughing. People with asthma and allergies are generally more susceptible to bronchospasm, which can be triggered by cold foods and drinks.

3. Mucus Thickening

Drinking ice can cause water to slowly drip down the esophagus, causing the trachea to cool, and ultimately thickening the mucus inside. This thickened mucus can make the throat feel scratchy and trigger a cough, while increasing the production of thick saliva and even phlegm.

4. Infection of the Larynx and Esophagus

Infections of the larynx and esophagus can make a person more susceptible to coughing after eating or drinking, including cold drinks. Infection causes swelling and increased sensitivity of the larynx and esophagus.

From the explanation above, it can be concluded that for people with good immune systems and without certain medical conditions, consuming ice cubes will not cause coughs/colds. However, if you experience a cough or runny nose after drinking ice continuously, please consult a doctor to find the cause.
