Migrain Saat Menstruasi

Period Migraine

During menstruation some women will experience headaches or migraines. Actually this is commonplace. According to research, there are around 60 percent of women who have a history of migraines outside of menstruation, and also experience migraines during menstruation.

Headaches or migraines can be triggered by several factors, one of which is hormonal changes. These hormonal changes usually occur during menstruation.

This headache or migraine usually occurs for two days before menstruation and three days after menstruation. Even though it's a natural thing, you need to know the causes of migraines during menstruation.

Causes of Migraine During Period

As we know, the main cause of migraines is due to hormonal changes that occur during menstruation. However, apart from hormonal changes, there are several causes of migraines during menstruation, as follows:

  1. Menstruation
During menstruation, estrogen and progesterone increase and decrease, adjusted to the menstrual cycle itself. Headaches or migraines that appear can occur due to the influence of the decrease in these two hormones in the days leading up to menstruation.
  1. Perimenopause
Perimenopause is a time for a woman's body to make a natural transition to menopause. This condition usually indicates the end of the reproductive period.

During perimenopause, some women also experience migraines or headaches. This is caused by the fluctuation of estrogen. So that makes the head a little tense, then feel headaches, migraines, and stress.

In addition, the causes of migraines during perimenopause can also be caused by irregular menstrual cycles during menstruation.
  1. Use of Birth Control Pills
The use of birth control pills can also cause migraines during menstruation. This is because birth control pills have a content similar to female reproductive hormones.

Birth control pills can then cause a decrease in estrogen before menstruation. This decrease in estrogen then triggers headaches.

How to Overcome Migraines During Menstruation

There are several easy ways you can deal with migraines during menstruation, as follows:

  1. Exercise Routinely
To reduce migraines or headaches, you can exercise regularly. However, keep in mind that to do regular exercise, you need to balance it by drinking enough water and paying attention to a healthy diet.
  1. Compress With Ice / Cold Compress
The second way to deal with migraines during menstruation is to compress your head with ice. This method is easy and you can do it anywhere.

You can use an ice pack, then wrap it in a towel, and place it on your forehead for 10 to 15 minutes.
  1. Get Enough Rest
During menstruation, you need enough sleep. Take about 7 to 8 hours to rest at night. To get better quality sleep, try to turn off all electronic devices and sleep in the dark
  1. Take Pain Reliever Medication
If all the methods above don't work, and you feel you can't stand the headache during menstruation, you can take pain relievers. You can buy these medicines at the nearest pharmacy. Some pain relievers that you can consume, as follows:
  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen
  • Naproxen sodium
  • Acetaminophen

Those are some ways to deal with migraines during menstruation. To anticipate headaches, you can make a note of when the pain appears. That way, you can prepare treatments to relieve it.

If headaches or migraines continue, you can consult a doctor to get proper and fast treatment.
