Endometriosis 101: Definition, Symptoms, and Treatment

Most women at a certain age will experience menstruation every month, although every woman has a different menstrual cycle. There are those who have a menstrual cycle every 21 to 35 days, and some have cycles that are shorter or longer than that.

However, during menstruation have you ever felt pain in the abdomen? This condition is often experienced by some women, but many women ignore this condition and consider it as something normal. Though this condition can be a sign of endometriosis. Endometriosis is a disease that is often not realized by women.

So what exactly is endometriosis? And what are the symptoms of this disease?

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a disease of the female reproductive system. Where this condition causes the tissue that should line the uterine wall to grow and accumulate outside the uterus.

Normally, the lining of the wall or commonly called the endometrium grows in a woman's uterus. Under normal conditions, the uterine wall tissue will experience thickening during the fertile period. When fertilization occurs, the fetus can attach to the uterus. Conversely, if fertilization does not occur, the thickened uterine wall will shed and come out in the form of blood. This condition is what we usually call menstruation.

If a woman has endometriosis, the tissue that grows outside the uterus will also shed during menstruation. However, the shed tissue does not come out through the uterus like other tissues, but settles around the reproductive organs. If this deposit is left for a long time, it can cause several disorders, such as inflammation, cysts, scar tissue and others. The most severe disturbance that occurs due to endometriosis is the emergence of endometrial cysts.

Endometrial cyst is a type of cyst that forms when endometrial tissue grows in the ovaries. These cysts are filled with fluid, large in size and found in the ovaries. This condition arises because endometriosis is not treated quickly. Endometriosis cysts can affect women for years and can cause chronic pelvic pain during menstruation.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

If a woman has endometriosis, there are several symptoms to look out for:

  • Pain in the hip area
  • Blood in the stool or urine

The way that Nona Woman always recommends is to change your lifestyle to a healthier one so you can balance your hormones.
