Is it Dangerous to Bleed During Intercourse?

Have you ever experienced bleeding during intercourse? Don't panic yet, because this can happen due to friction during penetration. But, that doesn't mean you can just ignore it.

Bleeding during intercourse can be caused by several factors, you know. Starting from mild ones such as friction, to more serious medical conditions such as menopause, sexually transmitted infections, pelvic inflammation, and can even be a sign of early pregnancy.

Although it is experienced by many women during menopause, bleeding during intercourse can also occur in younger women. So, the question is, is this condition dangerous? Find the answer in this article.

Causes of Bleeding During Intercourse

Have you ever experienced bleeding during intercourse? Don't panic yet, many factors can cause this, including:

1. Sex Too Frequently

One of the causes of bleeding during intercourse is having sex too frequently. Intense friction can cause irritation, scratches, and even small tears in the vagina, which then bleed.

2. Contraceptives

Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) can cause spotting or light bleeding after insertion, and during intercourse. Hormonal contraceptives such as birth control pills or vaginal rings can also cause bleeding.

3. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause bleeding, itching, and vaginal discharge. Wounds or inflammation of the vagina, cervix, or uterus can also cause bleeding during intercourse.

4. Polyps

Polyps in the uterus refer to abnormal tissue growth in the lining of the uterine wall or endometrium. This situation can result in bleeding during intercourse because the growing tissue is usually red or purple, which makes it easy to bleed when disturbed.

5. Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus. GeIt causes pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse, and can sometimes cause bleeding.

6. Pregnancy

The appearance of blood during intercourse, even without pain, can be an early sign of pregnancy. Some women may experience bleeding during intercourse in the early stages of pregnancy without realizing it.

7. Vaginitis Atrophy

Atrophic vaginitis is a condition in which the vagina experiences dryness, inflammation, burning sensation, and thinning of the vaginal walls. This condition usually occurs in postmenopausal women due to decreased estrogen levels, which can cause thinning of the uterine wall. Atrophic vaginitis can cause sudden bleeding during intercourse due to reduced mucus production, and not only occurs in postmenopausal women but also in young women due to yeast infections.

Is it Dangerous if you Bleed During Intercourse?

There are several factors that can cause a woman to experience bleeding after sex, which in medical terms is called "postcoital bleeding.”

If you have concerns about vaginal bleeding after sex, it is advisable to consult a GP or visit a sexual health clinic (GUM). They will examine your medical history and evaluate your symptoms, as well as provide advice on actions that need to be taken.

If you have not yet entered menopause and frequently experience bleeding after sex, if the bleeding continues for more than a day, or if the bleeding is very heavy and accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, you should immediately consult a doctor to ensure there is no more serious problem.

It is important to note that even if you have not yet entered menopause, bleeding after sex, even if light, is still worth discussing with a doctor to determine your health.

For those who have entered post-menopause, it is important to inform the doctor about post-sex bleeding. This is because doctors will pay more attention to bleeding that occurs after sex in this phase, because there should be no bleeding that occurs during or after sex after menopause.

Although there are several possible explanations for bleeding after sex before menopause, such as menstruation or high cervical sensitivity, if you are not menstruating, your doctor will perform an examination to rule out cervical or endometrial cancer, both of which can cause bleeding after sex, although they occur. This only happens once and is short-lived.
