In the contraceptive world offers various types, ranging from condoms, pills, injections, and many more. Each has its own form, way of working and benefits.
Well, one of the popular ones is the Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUD), or also known as the Intra Uterine Device (IUD). The IUD is a very effective contraceptive option. If you are not familiar or are considering this type of contraception, let's read the complete review!
What is an IUD?
Have you ever heard of the IUD? This intrauterine contraceptive device is becoming popular because it offers a practical and effective solution for preventing pregnancy. But, what exactly is an IUD?
An IUD is a small device that is placed in the uterus by a doctor. It is shaped like the letter T and is made of flexible plastic. Don't worry, installation is painless and only takes a short time.
So, how does the IUD work? When inserted, the IUD triggers the body's immune response. The body will consider the IUD as a foreign object and try to remove it. This reaction produces inflammation that creates an inhospitable environment for sperm, so that sperm cannot fertilize an egg.
IUD has many benefits, you know! One of them is that it has a very high success rate in preventing pregnancy, reaching 99.2 - 99.4%. This means you don't need to worry about getting pregnant while using the IUD.
Types of IUD
There are two types of Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices (IUD) that can be chosen according to individual needs. Here are the differences:
1. Hormonal IUD
One type of IUD consists of a flexible plastic material and is shaped like the letter T. Its function is to prevent pregnancy by releasing a small amount of the hormone progestin into the body. The working mechanism includes:
- Makes the mucus in the cervix thicker, so that sperm cannot reach the egg.
- Inhibits the release of egg cells from the ovaries (ovulation), so that no egg cells can be fertilized by sperm.
- In addition, hormonal IUDs can also help overcome various menstrual problems such as pain and cramps, as well as providing benefits in managing the symptoms of diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis.
2. Non-Hormonal IUD
The non-hormonal IUD, which also has a T shape, is different from the hormonal IUD because it has a copper coating around it. This copper plays a role in preventing pregnancy by changing sperm behavior. Sperm becomes ineffective in moving towards the egg, so pregnancy does not occur. Non-hormonal IUDs are often an appropriate choice for individuals who require contraception without hormones for medical reasons.
IUD Insertion Procedure
Insertion of IUDs for both types, hormonal and non-hormonal, has a similar procedure. Here are the steps:
- Preparation. The doctor will use a speculum to open the vagina and clean the area with antiseptic.
- Hormonal IUD Insertion. The horizontal arm of the hormonal IUD is folded and inserted into the applicator tube.
- IUD placement. The applicator tube is inserted into the uterus, and the hormonal IUD is carefully positioned.
- Applicator Release. The applicator tube is then removed, leaving the hormonal IUD in the uterus.
- Recheck. After installation, the doctor will schedule a re-examination to ensure the IUD has not moved and there are no signs of infection.
IUD installation is a simple and safe procedure. By understanding the procedure, you can feel calmer and more prepared if you want to use an IUD as a contraceptive option.
