Another way to delay menstruation is to use the contraceptive pill. These pills are usually available in packages of 28 tablets, where the first 21 tablets contain the hormone progesterone which are referred to as active pills, while the remaining 7 tablets do not contain hormones and are referred to as empty pills.

Usually, your doctor will advise you to only take active pills to delay menstruation, so you don't need to use empty pills. To return to normal menstrual cycles, you can stop using the contraceptive pill.

Usually, before menstruation, the level of the hormone progesterone in the body will decrease. When the levels of these hormones reach a certain level, the lining of the uterus sheds, signaling the start of menstruation.

By using this drug that contains progesterone, the lining of the uterus can be maintained or menstruation can be avoided as long as this drug is continued. In general, doctors will prescribe norethisterone to be taken 3 times a day, starting 14 days before the expected date of the next menstruation or starting on the 5th day of the menstrual cycle. Usually, menstruation will come within 2-3 days after stopping the use of this drug.

  • Using an IUD
IUD (Intrauterine Device) is an effective solution to delay menstruation, especially for women who experience heavy bleeding during menstrual periods. And there are two types of IUDs, namely hormonal IUDs and non-hormonal IUDs.

To delay menstruation, the doctor will install a hormonal IUD that contains the hormone progesterone. It has been shown to be effective in reducing the frequency and duration of menstrual bleeding, making it particularly suitable for women with prolonged periods.

  • Injecting Contraception
One method to delay menstruation is to use injectable contraception. Injectable contraceptives have a way of working that is almost the same as birth control pills, but with the difference that these injections are given every 90 days by a doctor. At the beginning of using injectable contraception, you may experience more bleeding than usual. However, don't worry, this condition will subside on its own and the effects of birth control pills to stop menstruation will work. To avoid unwanted side effects, it is very important for you to first consult with your doctor to assess the safety of using this type of contraception according to your medical condition.

  • Using a Vaginal Ring
Using a vaginal ring can delay the arrival of your period. The vaginal ring is usually made of a flexible plastic material. This tool contains the same hormones as birth control pills, so the way it works is also similar to birth control pills. The difference is, the vaginal ring is placed directly in the vagina.

The hormones in the vaginal ring are only active for 21 days. To delay menstruation, this ring needs to be changed every 21 days. Usually, the doctor or midwife will do the vaginal ring replacement. Some cases show that women may experience vaginal discharge, irritation, and slight discomfort at the start of using the vaginal ring. It should be noted that using a vaginal ring can also increase the risk of developing toxic shock syndrome, although this is rare.
